ROOT CANALS

A root canal, or root canal treatment (RCT), is a procedure that involves cleaning out and removing all of the infected or damaged nerve tissue and blood vessels from your tooth, and then filling it with a biocompatible material called gutta percha.

The innermost layer of your tooth, called the pulp, which contains these nerves and blood vessels, can become inflamed for multiple reasons: a cavity in the tooth, trauma, infection, cracks, and grinding, to name a few.  Sometimes this inflammation is reversible and can be fixed with more simple approaches, such as fillings, crowns, and nightguards. When this inflammation becomes irreversible, however, this is when the patient needs either a root canal or an extraction. Often times, this is due to a deep cavity that has reached the pulp, so now bacteria is able to enter the canal system and cause infection and inflammation.

Since the alternative to a root canal is an extraction (taking the tooth out), root canals are a great way to save teeth! Unfortunately, not every tooth will be a good candidate. Dr. Kalmantis will always talk to you about all of your treatment options.
