<image:title>Our Team - DR. ELENA KALMANTIS, D.D.S, HBSc.</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Kalmantis, owner and founder of Loft 32 Dentistry, graduated from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry (London, ON, Western University) with distinction in 2012, and has been practicing in Windsor & Essex County for the past 12 years - most of this time practicing in LaSalle. In 2021, she opened Loft 32 Dentistry, and is beyond thrilled and grateful to serve the beautiful community she calls home. Dr. Kalmantis is passionate about oral health, and loves to help her patients achieve a beautiful and healthy smile. She also loves educating patients – she has even been able to educate through another platform: her dental blog/Instagram page @drkalmantis, which she started in 2019. Her patients have always known her to be gentle and caring, with a close eye for detail and perfectionist tendencies. But she has also proven to be a helpful resource and a strong advocate for patients. She prides herself on being approachable and easily accessible for questions. Going back to earlier years, Dr. Kalmantis is originally from Toronto. Her family moved to Windsor in 1998. She graduated from Bellewood Public School, Vincent Massey Secondary School, and from the University of Windsor (HBSc., major: Biology, minor: Chemistry). She began her dental journey in 2008 when she moved to London, Ontario for dental school, following in the footsteps of her grandfather, 55+ years later. Dr. Kalmantis lives here in LaSalle, Ontario with her husband and two young children. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, reformer pilates, spinning, yoga, interior design/decorating and event planning. She also loves taking continuing education courses and is completely dedicated to life-long learning in this ever-evolving field of dentistry. She enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, but has particular interest in cosmetic procedures and smile makeovers, clear aligners, and pediatric dentistry. She is a member in good standing with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, the Ontario Dental Association, and the Essex County Dental Society.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Office - WHY LOFT 32?</image:title>
<image:caption>Fun Fact: It took Dr. Kalmantis almost a year to decide on the name for her future office. So where did Loft 32 come from? LOFT: Besides the fact that the office has a loft-like appearance with high ceilings, exposed in certain areas, in general this type of space gives off a casual, relaxed, and modern vibe. And that’s who we feel we are. We are professionals in every sense of the word, with a strong desire to create a legendary experience in addition to achieving clinical excellence, but we also pride ourselves on being down to earth and relaxed. We treat our patients like family. And 32? There are 32 teeth in the permanent dentition! This name also represents two passions coming together as one — the one word represents interior design (Loft) and the number represents teeth/dentistry (32).</image:caption>

<image:title>Crowns - CROWNS</image:title>
<image:caption>A dental crown is a type of dental restoration made of various materials, from gold to porcelain, that encircles the tooth. It's a full coverage cap. Some reasons your tooth may need a crown include: 1) It’s had a root canal - root canal treated teeth are dried out and brittle, which makes them more prone to breaking. Blood vessels found within the innermost layer of the tooth, the pulp, supply moisture to the tooth. These blood vessels are removed along with the nerve tissue during a root canal. A crown is recommended to protect it. 2) There's a large cavity, filling or fracture - when your tooth has little natural tooth structure left it is structurally compromised and needs protection to prevent it from further breakage. 3) Cracked tooth syndrome - when a patient has pain to biting and we can't find a specific cause, it could be that there are some internal cracks that we can't see. A crown helps prevent flexing of the tooth at these crack points during chewing (and thus prevents the pain this may cause), as it holds everything together. 4) It’s being used as a Bridge abutment - when you are using a tooth to help replace a missing tooth either in front or behind it. 5) Severely discoloured or misshapen teeth SO WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU NEED A CROWN? There are 2 appointments to complete a crown: The first appointment is longer and is similar to a larger filling appointment. A local anaesthetic is given to numb the tooth and we then remove tooth structure from the top and from all sides to create a smaller peg-like shape. A digital scan is then taken for fabrication of the crown, which is sent to our lab. A temporary crown is fabricated and cemented. The patient leaves with this temporary and comes back in a couple of weeks to cement the permanent crown. The second appointment is usually much quicker, and often times doesn't even require local anaesthetic. The temporary crown is removed and the tooth is cleaned of any excess cement. The permanent crown is then tried in and evaluated for fit, margins, aesthetics, bite, and contacts to adjacent teeth. If all is well, it is cemented in place with a permanent cement. Now the tooth is strong and protected, while still looking and functioning like a normal tooth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Nightguards - NIGHTGUARDS</image:title>
<image:caption>Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is a very common problem. We can put tremendous amounts of forces on our teeth when we are sleeping. This can cause severe tooth wear, fractures, and TMJ issues. A nightguard is an appliance that fits over your teeth and acts like a cushion to help protect your teeth and better distribute all those heavy forces. This also helps your muscles and TMJ with soreness. Using our digital impressions we are able to send your scan directly to the lab, quickly and efficiently, without the use of goopy impression material! Bonus: if you lose your nightguard, it’s very easy to have another one made since we have a copy of the digital scan.</image:caption>

<image:title>Implants - IMPLANTS (PLACEMENT & RESTORATION)</image:title>
<image:caption>A dental implant is a screw-shaped post, often made of titanium, that is surgically placed into the bone, and acts as the root of the missing tooth. Through a process called osseointegration, the bone actually starts to grow onto the threads of the implant, and thus creates a very strong bond. A crown is then either screwed directly onto the implant, or it is cemented onto an abutment attached to the implant. The beauty of this fixed treatment option is that we don't need to touch the adjacent teeth. So when you want a long term fixed option, and you have adjacent teeth that do not need crowns, you can replace the missing tooth with an implant, instead of cutting for a bridge. Implants have a high success rate, and have become the gold standard when it comes to tooth replacement. During the initial appointment a space is created in the bone for the implant. The implant is then placed and depending on a variety of factors, the implant site is closed up and left for 3-6 months to allow for osseointegration. In certain cases, a temporary restoration can be placed right away. But usually we are closing it up or placing a healing cap on it while we wait. After the implant has integrated a few months later, another appointment is needed to take an impression which is then sent to the lab. A couple weeks later, we are able to deliver the final prosthesis. Sometimes certain sites aren't ideal for implant placement, usually due to lack of bone, or proximity to vital structures. In these cases, additional procedures may be required prior to placement. In these more complex cases, a referral to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon is necessary.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bridges - BRIDGES</image:title>
<image:caption>When we have a missing tooth or teeth, we are able to use adjacent teeth (in front and behind) to help replace them. A bridge is where the tooth behind the space and the tooth in front (or multiple teeth in front/behind, depending how many teeth we are trying to replace) are prepared for crowns. These are called the abutment teeth. These crowns are then splinted together with the fake tooth (or teeth) to be replaced in the middle. This bridge, which can be made of various materials including porcelain/zirconia/gold etc, is then permanently cemented onto the abutment teeth. The average lifespan of a bridge is approximately 10-15 years, usually needing to be replaced due to cavities underneath or due to fracture. They can last much longer though with proper care and great hygiene, as well as protection against any parafunctional habits (wearing a nightguard!) Having a bridge fabricated requires 2 appointments. During the first appointment, we prepare the abutment teeth for crowns. We then take a digital scan to send to the lab for bridge fabrication. Next, we fabricate your temporary bridge and cement it with a temporary cement. This first appointment is usually quite long. During the second appointment, a couple weeks later, we remove the temporary and try-in the permanent bridge from the lab. We look at it from all angles, check your bite, make sure you're happy with the esthetics, and if all looks perfect, we cement it. This appointment is usually much quicker than the first!</image:caption>

<image:title>Clear Aligners - CLEAR ALIGNERS (INVISALIGN® & SURESMILE®)</image:title>
<image:caption>WHAT ARE CLEAR ALIGNERS? They are clear, plastic retainers that you wear to straighten your teeth, so they are basically “invisible” orthodontic devices. Unlike traditional braces which are fixed to your teeth, clear aligners are removable! HOW MANY HOURS PER DAY DO YOU WEAR THEM? Aim for 22 hours per day, only taking them out to eat. HOW LONG IS TOTAL TREATMENT? This totally depends on the severity of the case, treating a very mild case could take 2-3 months, and a more severe case could take a year and a half or longer. Aligners are changed every 1-2 weeks.⠀ DO THEY WORK WELL? YES! Keep in mind though, since they are removable, we are heavily depending on you to make sure you wear them! If you don’t wear them (or slack on the number of hours you wear them), they won’t work. So make sure to be compliant. CAN I EAT/DRINK WITH THE ALIGNERS IN? While the aligners are in, you’re able to drink water, but for any other food or drink you must take them out. Be sure to brush and floss before putting them back in, or if you are somewhere where this is not possible, rinse your mouth with water and make sure to brush and floss as soon as you can.</image:caption>

They must also be cleaned daily, and should be taken out at night to allow the tissues to breathe.</image:caption>

It is a colourless, odourless gas that, when inhaled, produces a calm, relaxed and comfortable feeling. It is extremely safe and the best part is that once you stop inhaling the gas (we give you 100% oxygen for 5 minutes after), you feel completely normal and are even able to drive afterwards. This is a great option for any anxious patient, and especially useful for children.</image:caption>

<image:title>Root Canals - ROOT CANALS</image:title>
<image:caption>A root canal, or root canal treatment (RCT), is a procedure that involves cleaning out and removing all of the infected or damaged nerve tissue and blood vessels from your tooth, and then filling it with a biocompatible material called gutta percha. The innermost layer of your tooth, called the pulp, which contains these nerves and blood vessels, can become inflamed for multiple reasons: a cavity in the tooth, trauma, infection, cracks, and grinding, to name a few. Sometimes this inflammation is reversible and can be fixed with more simple approaches, such as fillings, crowns, and nightguards. When this inflammation becomes irreversible, however, this is when the patient needs either a root canal or an extraction. Often times, this is due to a deep cavity that has reached the pulp, so now bacteria is able to enter the canal system and cause infection and inflammation. Since the alternative to a root canal is an extraction (taking the tooth out), root canals are a great way to save teeth! Unfortunately, not every tooth will be a good candidate. Dr. Kalmantis will always talk to you about all of your treatment options.</image:caption>

<image:title>Veneers - VENEERS</image:title>
<image:caption>WHAT IS A PORCELAIN VENEER? It’s a thin shell of porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of your tooth to improve its appearance and protect its surface. We’re able to improve the shape, contours, size, position and shade of the teeth. DO YOU HAVE TO DRILL MY TEETH? It depends, usually we have to remove at least a little bit of tooth structure, but “no prep veneers” are also possible. Veneers are much more conservative than crowns, and while they aren’t always indicated, when they are, they remove less tooth structure. A crown removes tooth structure from all the way around the tooth (front and back), while a veneer doesn’t wrap around to the back. HOW LONG IS THE PROCESS FROM START TO FINISH? This varies but generally about a month. To begin, a digital scan is taken of your teeth, and the lab creates a “diagnostic wax up” to show how the teeth can look with veneers. This can be tried into the mouth using a mould so that you can see what veneers would look like before even getting started! Once we decide to go ahead, the teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of tooth structure. A digital scan of these preps is taken for the lab. Temporary veneers are then fabricated based on the initial wax up. We usually follow up in about a week to discuss how you like the temporaries. We make any desired changes and then relay the information back to the lab. The lab is now able to fabricate the permanent veneers. Once they’re finished, we try them in and if all looks good and you are happy with them, they are bonded/cemented into place! Smile makeovers often include veneers (where we are able to be more conservative) or crowns (sometimes required due to heavily restored teeth or deep and dark staining), or a combination of both. Request a free smile makeover consultation today to discuss your options with Dr. Kalmantis!</image:caption>
